Man arrested after alleged string of random assaults, vandalism in downtown Winnipeg

Winnipeg police say a 30-year-old man was charged with assault and property damage following a series of alleged unprovoked attacks and vandalism incidents on Oct 1.

At approximately 9:40 a.m., police say the suspect was in a parking lot in the 300 block of Broadway and began smashing vehicle windows.

When confronted by a security guard, the suspect allegedly struck him with a stick, then stole the guard’s radio and used it to break two windows of a nearby building before fleeing toward Broadway. Officials say the guard did not require medical attention.

While the suspect was on Broadway, police say he randomly punched two men, aged 61 and 22. Police state the older victim was not injured, while the younger sustained an upper-body injury and was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Shortly after, WPS says the suspect went to a government building in the 400 block of York Street where he allegedly damaged more property.

Sheriffs at this location detained him until Winnipeg police officers arrived and took him into custody. While being held, the suspect allegedly assaulted one of the sheriffs, who did not require medical attention.

Brendan Jay Chabauty has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with weapon, assault, mischief over $5,000, mischief under $5,000/obstruct in enjoyment x 4, failure to comply with probation order, and assault a peace officer. He was detained in custody.

The allegations have not been tested in court.
