Just days ago, a woman was hit by a car and suffered serious injuries outside a Gurdwara on King Edward Street in north Winnipeg. Now, Mayor Scott Gillingham says the city will look into potentially making safety changes on the street, a welcome sign for local residents.
“My thoughts are with all those affected, sincerely I mean that, and so we’ll take a look at this and see if this will be a space and place that would warrant an investment from the road safety fund,” said Mayor Gillingham.
Harpreet Kaur says the community was shaken by the accident, and that improved safety is vital given how many elderly and young children frequent the Gurdwara.
“We just need safety for our residents, for our parents and our kids, and that’s all,” said Kaur. “Okay, we’re happy to hear that, but I think it should be sooner.
“We have a 60 speed limit here, I don’t think it should be 30, but maybe 50, something like that, and there should be one for the pedestrians. It’s got to be easy for the pedestrians because we have a religious temple here, so it’s got to be easier for the people.”
CityNews spoke to the victim’s family, who said she is recovering and in stable condition.
“We are happy, it’s so, so good that she is good now, because everybody was thinking that she wasn’t going to survive, but we are glad she’s okay. We are happy to hear that,” said Kaur.
CityNews reached out to Devi Sharma, city councillor for Old Kildonan, but we did not hear back.
