A collision involving a suspected impaired driver has claimed the lives of two individuals on Kenaston Blvd. over the weekend.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS), the collision happened at Kenaston Boulevard and Enterprise Drive on Saturday night around 9:30 p.m.
The suspected impaired driver is in custody.
“Two people are dead because of an impaired driver, so that’s the message we want to get across,” said Const. Pat Saydak, Winnipeg police service.
WPS says the driver of the pickup truck was travelling at a “high rate of speed” southbound on Kenaston Blvd., drove onto the shoulder of the road and hit two people.
The driver fled the scene, but officers found the suspect a short time after.
A 31-year-old man was found dead at the scene and a 25-year-old woman was taken to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The driver, a 46-year-old man, has been charged with several offences, including two counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and two counts of operation of a conveyance causing death while impaired. He was also charged with fleeing the scene of the accident.
A bicycle was located nearby, and police are still investigating the lead-up to the collision and asking for the public’s assistance.
“We’re appealing to the public if they have any dash cam footage or if they were driving in the area at the time to be able to provide this to police,” said Saydak.
“In between the festive season and the summer road watch program, we still all the time on a regular basis, our traffic units specifically are always out there and looking for impaired drivers,” added Const. Alex Peterson, Winnipeg police season.
The investigation is ongoing.
The WPS traffic division asks anyone with information or video of the incident to call police or Crime Stoppers.
