Service providers come together in an effort to support Winnipeg’s homeless

A group of organizations came together Friday to give the city's most vulnerable access to supports and care in "one of the biggest days" for Winnipeg's homeless folks.

Friday was one of the most important days of the year for Winnipeg’s homeless.

More than 40 service providers came together to help the city’s most vulnerable with everything from their health to employment. Stations set up at Weetamah Centre gave immunizations, haircuts, foot care and access to supports like treaty cards and employment resources.

It’s the kind of event that can make a real difference, according to Ryan McKay, who pulled himself out of homelessness.

“I got out of it. I fought. And here I am,” said McKay. “I used all the resources that are here today in order for me to get where I am.”

Both McKay and Christian Swan say it’s easy to fall through the cracks.

“After the amputation of my right leg, below the knee, I became homeless and then the Métis rapid service gave me the opportunity to stay there. And they helped me secure housing so I’m very thankful for that,” Swan explained.

Jackie Hunt, the senior director of strategy and impact at End Homelessness Winnipeg, says, “It’s important for our relatives and those experiencing homelessness to know that they have a community of people behind them who love them and they want to help them.”

Hunt says it will be hard to make real progress in tackling the record number of homeless Winnipeggers until more affordable housing is available. They continue to work with all levels of government and community partners.

“We’re just going to keep working in the spirit that we’re going to end chronic homelessness in the city of Winnipeg,” said Hunt.

McKay adds, “We can get through this, it’s just a matter of helping as many people, one person at a time.”
