Winnipeg police say a 54-year-old man has been charged after being found holding a knife near the Victoria General Hospital.
WPS says officers responded to Pembina Highway near Dartmouth Drive around 10:40 a.m., after receiving a report that a man was wandering into traffic with a large knife.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man in the center median with the knife and the man reportedly began yelling at the officers, before approaching the police vehicle and banging on the windows with his fist and the knife.
Due to this, the officers called for support in an effort to take the man into custody.
While waiting for additional officers to arrive at the scene, the initial responders witnessed the man conduct erratic and violent behaviour, which included walking back into traffic before returning to the police vehicle and banging on the windows.
After repeated attempts to get the man to drop the knife, officers used multiple tasers before taking him into custody.
In a statement, police say the man was “believed to be experiencing psychosis at the time of this incident, The man was sedated, stabilized, and transported to hospital for further assessment.”
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Police say the man is facing charges of possession of a weapon and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.
