Man charged after setting home and office on fire before turning himself in: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say a man has been charged with arson after turning himself in on Friday.

WPS says earlier in the day, they, along with fire crews, responded to a pair of arson incidents.

Police say around 2:42 p.m., a man reportedly poured a container of gasoline over the inside of his house, before lighting it on fire. The fire caused an explosion, blowing the man out of the home.

The fire quickly spread to neighbouring homes before WFPS were called.

The man was reportedly uninjured and fled the scen prior to police arriving, and went to a nearby convenience store, where he got more gasoline.

Around 4:13 p.m., he reportedly went to an office building along Donald Street, where he poured gasoline inside the lobby and lit it on fire.

Several employees fled the building and no injuries were reported.

Just after 4:30 p.m., 49-yera-old Jonathan Roger Hein turned himself in at the Winnipeg Police Headquarters, where he reportedly admitted to setting both the fires.

Hein has since been charged with two counts of arson causing property damage and two counts of arson with disregard to human life.

Police say the home was deemed a total loss and the only the lobby of the office building sustained significant damage.
