‘I honestly did not believe it’: Winnipeg woman with multiple sclerosis has car, mobility scooter stolen

A woman with MS is asking Winnipeggers to keep an eye out for her stolen car that contains a specialized lift and had her mobility scooter inside. She's been left without a way to get to her medical appointments after thieves broke into her garage Monday night.

A 75-year-old Winnipeg woman with multiple sclerosis has been robbed of her freedom after a thief stole her specialized car and scooter Monday night.

The woman, who CityNews has agreed not to name out of concern for her safety, had a lift installed in her car, which held the scooter she’d use whenever she left the house since she can’t get the scooter in and out of the vehicle.

The thief or thieves broke into her garage overnight. She didn’t know her car, lift, scooter and purse were gone until the next morning.

“I didn’t believe it. I honestly did not believe it,” she said. “I just kept looking. Like why would anybody take a scooter and a 22-year-old car. Why?

“I don’t know what’s happening to Winnipeg. I can’t believe this happened. I can’t believe anybody would take a scooter from somebody who’s disabled.”

Now she’s left wondering how she’ll get to her many medical appointments or even get out of her neighbourhood.

“Grocery shopping, visiting or whatever you do when you go out. Go to a park or whatever. So I can’t do anything now. Nothing, nothing,” the woman told CityNews.

She can’t even get a new bank card.

“To get a new card at the bank, you have to go inside,” said her ex-husband Gary Solar. “But she can’t go inside because she doesn’t have a scooter that can go inside a vehicle. So we have to figure out how to do that.

“Couldn’t believe it. Who would steal from a handicap person their mobility?”

The Winnipeg woman says she often tries to look on the bright side of things, but is having trouble doing that this time around.

“I’m an optimistic person. And I always like to think if people take something from me, they needed it more than I did. But I can’t do that in this situation.”

Her vehicle is a 2003 blue RAV4 with a few dents in the back. The licence plate number is DPP699. She’s asking Winnipeggers for their help.

“Just please look for my car,” she said.
