On Thursday, The Forks unveiled its plans for a re-imagining of the Alexander Docks, which have gone unused for over a decade. But it will now receive a new lease on life, set to be transformed into a riverside park.
Complete with gathering spaces, seating terraces, enhanced transportation routes, and a dedicated ceremony area.
“This isn’t just about rebuilding a dock, it’s about reconnecting to the river, to each other, and our shared story,” said Sara Stasiuk, the president & CEO of The Forks.
“The design team, with deep input from the community, has envisioned a space for gathering, ceremony, play, reflection. It will also be a place to sit, to talk with a friend, share a picnic, to fish.”

Desiree Theriault, the architect & partner of Narratives Inc., added, “When we lose access to the water, we lose part of our connection to place, to each other, and ourselves. The Alexander Docks sit at a point where that connection can be restored.”
While a site of historic significance, the docks have also been the site of tragedy. In August 2014, the site became associated with the death of Tina Fontaine, after her body was found nearby in the Red River.
Prompting calls for a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.
“Today we remember Tina, we honour the families and community members who have worked to turn this space into a place of remembrance and reflection,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
Once complete, the revitalisation of the docks will include a memorial site for missing and murdered indigenous women and girls in tribute to Fontaine.
The Forks estimates the re-imagining of the docks will cost about $10.8 million, with the Forks Foundation expected to lead fundraising efforts.
