Premier Kinew calling on feds to take action as China puts tariffs on Canadian canola

A day after China slapped preliminary tariffs on Canadian canola, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is calling on the federal government to return to the negotiating table.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, Kinew stressed the need for immediate action from the Carney government, before Western Canada feels the brunt of steep new tariffs, which will impose a 75 per cent duty on Canadian canola heading to China beginning Thursday.

While supportive of the ‘elbows up’ sentiment, Kinew says a more concrete plan is needed to greater protect Canadian industries from coast to coast.

“Let’s have a path forward, around engaging and negotiating tariffs being removed. We might be able to stand up to Donald Trump’s tariffs on one side, or the People’s Republic of China on the other side, but multiple tariffs stacking up in multiple directions, that is something we need a coherent plan for as a country,” said Kinew.
