RCMP have laid charges in a murder case in Teulon, Manitoba, north of Winnipeg. Thirty-seven-year-old Sean Lawson was found wounded at a home on Sunday but later died in hospital.
According to RCMP, officers who responded to reports of a shooting chased the suspect into a corn field, where they arrested him.
Twenty-four-year-old Donavin Skogan faces charges of second degree murder and intimidation of a justice system participant. CityNews spoke to RCMP about that lesser-known charge and they confirm it had to do with a witness in this case.
Lawson’s 12-year-old child was the one who called 9-1-1 confirmed Lawson’s mother on her online accounts.
Court documents obtained by CityNews reveal that Skogan was out on bail from a string of incidents in October and November of last year, including a search warrant where police found guns in his home. Skogan had previously received a firearm prohibition order.
In November of last year, the Crown made several arguments against granting bail, including asking for a reverse onus where Skogan would have to prove why he should get out. The defence argued good behaviour and preparation to abide by strict conditions. Bail was granted.
In the meantime, Lawson’s family and friends remember him as an upstanding citizen who didn’t have a bad bone in his body.
“It’s heart-shattering that this senseless and horrific crime could happen to such an amazing human being,” said Richelle Rae-Anne, longtime friend.
Lawson worked as a shipper/receiver at a business in Winnipeg.
