Winnipeg police say a 38-year-old man has been charged after allegedly being connected to a string of violent incidents in the St. Boniface area.

WPS says officers responded to the St. Boniface area around 6 p.m. on June 14 after reports claimed a man was breaking into vehicles.

It is believed that the man broke into a car along Dupont Street near Yardly Street and stole items from within.

A short time later, the same man was seen breaking into another vehicle near Enfield Crescent and Traverse Avenue.

Reports indicate that the witness to the break-in attempted to intervene, but the man allegedly picked up a brick and threatened to kill him, before throwing the brick and running away.

Police say just after 7 p.m., the same man is believed to have forced his way into a home along Hamel Avenue near St. Jean Baptiste Street, and allegedly sexually assaulted a woman, before she screamed and the man was chased away by a neighbour.

WPS says the woman’s father arrived a short time later and chased the man to the area of Pioneer Avenue and Waterfront Drive at which point a brick was thrown.

Police were finally able to apprehend the man near Waterfront Drive and Bannatyne Avenue after receiving a report around 8:04 p.m.

Since, 38-year-old Matthew Raymond James Stevens has been charged with six offences relating to sexual assault, break and enter, assault with a weapon, uttering threats to kill, and theft.

Police note that no medical treatment was needed from any of the incidents.
