Man charged following Point Douglas armed and barricaded incident

Winnipeg police say a 36-year-old man has been charged following an armed and barricaded incident on Saturday.

A heavy police presence could be seen in the Point Douglas neighbourhood after WPS responded to reports of gunshots just after 5 a.m.

“An individual was armed with a firearm, an adult male. He transitioned from that area on Grove Street to the area back that is now contained and has been contained for some time, Sutherland and the Disraeli Bridge area,” said Cst. Dani McKinnon, the WPS public information officer, on Saturday.

Police say prior to their arrival, a man had a dispute with occupants of the home, when he reportedly shot at the home.

Afterwards, he reportedly ran off and went under the Disraeli Bridge near Sutherland, where he was later found by police.

Officers say the man would not put down his gun after they found him, shifting the matter to an armed and barricaded situation.

As a result, WPS closed down the area to all vehicle, pedestrian, and boat traffic to protect the community.

Police worked with the man for over 10 hours, providing him with water as they attempted to de-escalate the situation.

Around 3:23 p.m., after spending hours in the extreme heat, police were able to take the man safely into custody.

WPS says that no injuries were reported at any point, including the initial shooting incident.

Since, 36-year-old Daniel Emrys Larsen has been charged with ten charges, including being unlawfully at large, violating his parole, possession of a weapon
