The City of Winnipeg officially kicked off the 2025 construction season, asking residents for patience as they navigate the city this summer. Crews will be working on nearly 150 kilometers of roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure over the coming months.
The $164 million in funding will go toward a wide array of projects, including several major initiatives that the city says are key to improving transportation in the long term.
“This includes continued rehabilitation work on the Pembina Highway bridges over the La Salle River, interim repairs on the Louise Bridge which will begin soon, and major projects on Inkster, McGregor, Dugald, and Abinoji Mikanah,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham.
The city also announced that they are providing accessible tools to help residents plan around construction, including the Ways app and up-to-date online maps.
“We’ve got a construction map that highlights all of the $164 million in projects, and then there’s the lane closures map, which shows road closures due to utility work, tree trimming, and other disruptions,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works.
Mayor Gillingham also provided an update on construction at the Portage and Main intersection, which he says is on track for completion this month.
“The timing of that project—opening the intersection at grade to pedestrians—is aligned with changes to our transit network,” said Mayor Gillingham. “June 29 is when we transition from the current system to a brand-new transit system. The goal is, and it will be achieved, that pedestrians are able to cross the intersection before that change, because buses are going to flow through Portage and Main like never before.”
The new transit system will consist of rapid transit lines, frequent express lines, frequent lines, and direct lines, supported by a feeder route network made up of community and connector roads.
