Morgan Grace’s fiddle has taken her to incredible heights, from small community stages to the nation’s capital, where she recently performed for the King and Queen during their visit to Ottawa.
It was a moment she’ll never forget. The Métis fiddler opened Canada’s historic Throne Speech ceremony, the first ever delivered by King Charles, last week. She played two songs, including Teardrop Waltz, a tune she’s performed at events like the 80th anniversary of D-Day and Senator Murray Sinclair’s celebration of life.

“It was so exciting and was such an important event, but it definitely put some pressure on,” said Grace.
“I was definitely nervous and shaky. As soon as I got off and went to back to my dad, I said, ‘Could you hear me shaking? I was so nervous I felt like you could hear it,’” she explained.
But reaching the royal stage didn’t happen overnight. Grace started playing at just four years old, inspired by music around her family’s dinner table.
“I grew up going to an old farmer’s house near Grand Beach, and we always had music around the kitchen table, and there was a Fiddle player there, and I looked up to them and said I want to do that,” she explained.

Her journey started small. When she played Indigenous Day in Selkirk, eight years ago. She says that catapulted her career, as she first time she played live in front of people.
“A month before, I refused to play for my Aunt at a birthday party, and a month later, I was on stage. I wouldn’t be here without it,” said Grace.
Since then, she’s played across the country from festivals and sporting events to seniors’ homes in her hometown. And with every performance, she hopes to inspire.

“Fiddle isn’t the coolest thing to do, but it’s part of my culture and I wasn’t to inspire others to follow their culture.”
Through it all, she says her family has been by her side, especially her dad, who doubles as her manager and guitarist. Grace is gearing up to perform this summer in Ottawa at Canada Day celebrations.
