5 hospitalized after fight on Mountain Avenue: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg Police are investigating a violent altercation that led to a stabbing incident in Winnipeg’s North End, resulting in five people being sent to hospital with injuries. Eddie Huband reports.

Winnipeg police say five people were taken to hospital with injuries after a fight involving a group of people early Monday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service says three people were hospitalized in critical condition and two in stable condition after 4 a.m. All are now in stable condition.

“This incident came in at approximately 4 a.m. between 4 a.m. and 4:30. Winnipeg patrol officers responded to a report of multiple stabbings in the Mountain Avenue area, so we received more than one report of more than one stabbing. Police arrived and determined that five people had been involved in this stabbing altercation,” explained Cst. Dani McKinnon.

There were no fatalities, but major crimes has taken over the investigation. What is known at this point is that there was a large group, potentially two, when some kind of altercation or fight took place, leading to a more violent escalation. Police say the investigation will take time, as statements are still needed from those who were transported to the hospital.

“You know it’s early, and due to the significant injuries to some of the individuals, and various stages of treatment, they’re still in the process of getting those initial statements and identifications done to determine how everybody was involved in this,” said Cst. McKinnon.

CityNews has spoken to several residents in the area, who say that they witnessed multiple police vehicles in this back lane adjacent to Mountain Avenue.

One woman claims she was the one who made the call to police, saying she saw multiple young adults around the area during the early morning, followed by screaming and commotion, prompting her to dial 9-1-1.

Police say there is no risk to public safety, calling it an “isolated incident.”

Despite there being no safety risk, residents remain concerned, with one adding she no longer feels safe in the (name of the area) neighbourhood.

The WPS major crimes unit is investigating.
