Ahead of the Winnipeg Sea Bears’ home opener this evening, the City of Winnipeg made an emotional tribute to franchise icon Chad Posthumus with an honorary street naming. Posthumus tragically passed away last November.
Beloved for the selfless work he did within the community, Chad’s passing—due to complications from a brain aneurysm—sent shock waves through the entire city. Nearly six months after his death, the former Sea Bears captain will be forever remembered outside the arena he once played in.
“The current Donald Street running through the center of Winnipeg acts as a major artery to the beating heart of our sports teams,” said Jessie Posthumus, Chad’s brother. “Now that artery will grow stronger, as Donald will beautifully share with Chad, allowing his legacy to stand in front of the Canada Life Centre, and his spirit to help guide our Sea Bears and our Jets to victory.”
“Chad was not just the first signing, he was the face of the Sea Bears,” said Scott Gillingham, Mayor of Winnipeg. “A hometown hero, an anchor for the team—he was the kind of person that everybody could watch and rally behind. Whether you knew him personally or watched him play, you felt the ripple effects of his community work, his energy, and his love for all.”
Chad’s number 33 jersey will be raised to the rafters during the Sea Bears’ home opener at Canada Life Centre Friday night, so Winnipeg sports fans can look up and remember the player—and the person—that he was.
“I’d like to finish just by saying: Go Jets, go Sea Bears, and we love you, Chad,” said Posthumus.
