Manitoba’s police watchdog — The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — says no charges will be laid against a Winnipeg police officer who fired their service weapon at a man with a knife in June 2024.
The incident reportedly happened around 5:20 p.m. at Arlington Street and Notre Dame Avenue on June 11, 2024, after officers responded to a report that a man who was armed with a knife was running into traffic.
Officers responded, and a use-of-force encounter occurred, which included tasers being deployed. Once the tasers were deemed to have no effect, an officer fired their gun, hitting the man.
He was taken to a hospital in unstable condition, before being upgraded to stable.
Over the course of their investigation, IIU investigators spoke to the officer in question, three officers and eight people who witnessed the incident, and the man who was shot.
Following the interviews, it was determined that no charges were to be laid against the officer.
Police note that the man who was shot remains in court on charges relating to the incident.
