Winnipeg homicide investigators are probing the death of a 30-year-old man after a shooting in West End early Tuesday morning.
The Winnipeg Police Service says the victim has been identified as Brenton Sean Paul Harper, a member of Garden Hill First Nation who was living in Winnipeg.
Officers were called to Agnes Street near Ellice Avenue for the report of shots fired around 12:55 a.m. They found Harper with injuries “consistent with being shot.”
“I was changing my sons diaper, my two year old’s diaper, and I heard two gunshots like pow pow,” said Tanis Etter, eyewitness. “So as soon as I heard the gunshots, I called my friend downstairs right away and I said did you hear that?, she said what?, I’m like the two gunshots. She said no I didn’t, where? I’m like outside our house. I said there’s someone on the sidewalk I have to go see, so she’s like okay I’m coming. So she came out and met me out here we went across and I saw the guy on the sidewalk and I called 9-11 right away.”
“Central district general patrol officers attended and located a male with injuries consistent with being shot,” said Cst. Patrick Saydak, Winnipeg police service. “Emergency care was provided and he was transported in critical condition to a hospital. He has since succumbed to those injuries.”
Etter says she saw the suspect flee the scene and immediately wished she would have got a better look at him.
“As soon as he heard sirens, he booked it down Agnes towards St Mathews, and then cut across and kept going on the opposite side, but that’s pretty much all I saw, I didn’t get a chance to see what he looked like, he was all dark he was in a hoodie,” said Etter.
Etter hopes police are able to resolve the situation soon, as the entire experience was frightening for her family.
“Its very concerning, like my friend downstairs she has three kids, her son is only two, I have five kids up here,” said Etter. “I’ve been here for 6 ½, 7 months and this is the first time there’s ever been a shooting.”
The investigation in ongoing.
