6 hospitalized in pair of Winnipeg apartment building fires

Six people were taken to hospital in unstable condition in a pair of apartment building fires — one in St. Boniface Monday night and another on Redwood Avenue Tuesday morning.

In the first blaze, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says three occupants had already evacuated the building on Langevin Street near Hamel Avenue when crews arrived around 8:30 p.m. They were then taken to hospital by paramedics.

Firefighters declared the blaze under control by 9:16 p.m.

The WFPS says pets were “affected in the incident” – without providing more details – and animal services were called to the scene.

On Tuesday around 7:40 a.m., crews were called to a fire in an apartment on Redwood Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to find several occupants who needed help to leave the building. The WFPS says six residents were rescued through a window as it was not safe for them to leave through the building.

The blaze was declared under control at 8:10 a.m.

Eight patients were assessed on scene by paramedics, with three of them being taken to hospital in unstable condition.

In both fires, the city’s emergency social services team was called to provide temporary support for displaced residents.

The causes of both fires is under investigation.
