After three months of searching the Prairie Green Landfill, RCMP have confirmed that one of two sets of human remains they found belong to Morgan Harris of Long Plain First Nation. Neve Van Pelt reports.

Manitoba RCMP have confirmed that human remains found at the Prairie Green Landfill late last month, belong to Morgan Beatrice Harris of Long Plain First Nation.

“I hope it helps to bring closure and healing, and I hope that they have the chance to move forward and memorialize and commemorate,” said Wab Kinew, Premier of Manitoba.

Harris’s remains were found as part of a search and recovery mission initiated by the Manitoba government, at the request of her and Marcedes Myran’s families.

In a Facebook post, Harris’ daughter Cambria said this is “a very bittersweet moment” and they believe both of their families will bring both of their loved one’s home.

Harris’ cousin, Melissa Robinson, added that they “led and fought with their hearts” and now Morgans “spirit can rest.”

“To have the ability to bring their loved one home is completely tied up with their ability to move forward with ceremony and grieving and healing from the loss that they’ve experienced, which let’s not forget was such a terrible loss,” said Kinew.

Harris was among four First Nations women who were murdered by convicted serial killer Jeremy Skibicki in 2022. In addition to her and Myran, he was found guilty of murdering Rebecca Contois and an unidentified woman who has been given the name Buffalo Woman.

In a statement, the assembly of Manitoba Chiefs said it’s through the families “love and determination that Morgan has been found” and that “no family should have to search in this way, yet they stood firm in their truth and refused to be silenced.”

Southern Chiefs’ Organization Grand Chief Jerry Daniels added that “Morgan deserved so much more” and “her story is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action on the national emergency of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, two spirit, and gender diverse people.”

“I hope that we have the ability to do the same for the family of Marcedes Myran as well too and I hope that we can do that soon,” said Kinew.

RCMP confirmed a second set of human remains were discovered in the search, but they have not yet been identified.
