Manitoba Council of Scouts Canada holds 53rd annual Klondike Derby

The 53rd annual klondike derby is the biggest winter event for the Manitoba council of Scouts Canada and it’s taking place at Camp Amisk.
Over the last two days, over 50 teams of kids of various ages were out competing, having fun, and most importantly: learning crucial life skills.
“Each year I take away skills that I wouldn’t have, mostly teamwork,” said Henley Galbraith, scout. “A couple of years ago, we did one where we had these two long skiis, and we had to work together to move forward.”
“Well I think the point of this is to be working as a team, like in this bridge exercise you have to work as a team and strategize what to do in the limited time that you have,” said Sebastien Fillion, venturer.
The two day event saw a klondike gold-rush themed trail through the camp, with the older group going Saturday, and then volunteering to help the younger kids on Sunday.
“We have 10 stations, that the kids will go through with their teams, and they pull a dog sled so the children act as the dogs pulling the sleds through, and each station they stop there and there will be a challenge,” said Larry Stewart, volunteer scouter at Winnipeg 67th group.
The challenges are all about problem solving together, they included things like fire making, cooking in the cold, and even crossing a rope bridge.
“There’s certain things that they don’t ever forget, and all of these children that go through this program, they look forward to coming back,” said Stewart.
