Winnipeg police say two teenagers are facing charges after a man who was assaulted downtown Sunday night died of his injuries.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the victim has been identified as Steven Gordon Loonfoot, 45, a member of Garden Hill First Nation who was living in Winnipeg for several years.

Officers were called around 10:30 p.m. to Qu’Appelle Avenue near Carlton Street for the report of an assault. They located Loonfoot suffering from multiple upper-body injuries. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he died of his injuries.

Police say a 16-year-old boy was arrested in the area shortly after, while another was arrested on Victory Place “later that day.”

Winnipeg police say the Manitoba Prosecution Service has authorized second-degree murder charges for both teens.

The WPS homicide unit is investigating.
