Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after the driver of a vehicle fleeing Winnipeg police was seriously injured in a collision with another vehicle and a light pole Monday night.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says both the driver and passenger of the vehicle fleeing police were taken to hospital for treatment.
The Winnipeg Police Service says it began around 11:30 p.m. when a vehicle sped by officers at Henderson Highway and Johnson Avenue.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but they lost sight of it as it sped away, according to police. A police helicopter advised officers of the vehicle’s location “after it had rear-ended another vehicle and collided with a light standard” at Chief Peguis Trail and Henderson Highway.
That collision rendered the vehicle inoperable, police say. A passenger then fled on foot but was arrested by officers soon after. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and needed to be extracted by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service personnel.

The IIU says the driver fractured his leg and suffered hypothermia “due to the time need to extract him from the vehicle.”
Because a broken leg is considered a serious injury, IIU needed to be notified and the police watchdog is now investigating.
The collision shut down the intersection of Chief Peguis and Henderson for several hours. It reopened to traffic in all directions Tuesday before noon.
