Winnipeg police say a 40-year-old man has been charged after being found to be in possession of drugs.

WPS says around 11:45 a.m. on Feb. 6, while officers were investigating an unrelated matter in an apartment complex, they came into contact with a man who was acting suspiciously.

Officers noticed the man reach into his pockets and told him to stop, however, the man reportedly refused, at which point he was handcuffed and searched for safety reasons.

During the search, officers were able to find around 1.08 ounces of methamphetamine, around 77.8 grams of fentanyl, around $860 in cash, and a white-handled scraping knife.

Police note that after the man was in custody he tried to conceal his identity and gave officers forged identification. The man was later identified as 40-year-old Rex James Smith.

Smith has since been charged with possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a forged document, and possession of proceeds obtained by a crime. Police also noted that he had two warrants.
