Transcona care home getting $72M, 90-bed expansion

The provincial government announced a $72 million dollar expansion project to bring 90 new beds to Park Manor Care Home in Transcona, aimed to be completed by spring of 2028. Eddie Huband reports.

To tackle a massive capacity issue plaguing Manitoba’s health-care sector, the province announced a $72 million-expansion project at Park Manor care home.

The expansion will add 90 beds to the Transcona care home, where seniors currently live in semi-private or four-bed rooms.

“We’ve been able reopen about 40-50 per cent of the beds that were closed by the previous government in existing personal care homes, so we’re doing that work alongside building net new personal care home beds,” said Manitoba Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara.

Connie Newman of the Manitoba Association of Seniors Communities (MASC) says while every bit helps, more resources should be focused on supports so seniors can stay in their own communities – as a way to deal with capacity issues at personal care homes.

“The longer we can keep them in community through wellness, through social prescribing, through connecting to seniors’ centres, transportation to get food, the better off we’ll all be,” said Newman, MASC’s executive director.

“Ninety beds, it’s a start, but it’s not enough.”

Asagwara says the project is getting started soon.

“So the anticipated conclusion when we come back and have a big celebration and get to check out the new rooms is spring of 2028, but we’re going to get started this year.”
