Winnipeg man accused of hitting man in wheelchair while driving impaired, then fleeing scene

Winnipeg police say a 59-year-old man is facing charges after allegedly hitting a man in a wheelchair who was crossing at an intersection on Sunday.

The Winnipeg Police Service says around 9 p.m., officers witnessed an SUV hitting the man at Isabel Street and Bannatyne Avenue before fleeing the scene.

The 50-year-old victim was thrown from his wheelchair and was significantly injured, police add. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition, before being upgraded to stable.

Officers took the driver into custody a short distance away from the scene of the collision.

Winnipeg police allege he was driving impaired, and he was charged with that offence.
