No injuries in unprovoked hammer assault on Winnipeg bus

By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a man attempted to strike a fellow passenger on a transit bus with a hammer in what authorities are describing as an unprovoked attack.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it happened Monday around 10:15 a.m. on a bus in North Point Douglas – around Sutherland Avenue and Disraeli Street.

Police say the accused pulled out a hammer, without provocation, and tried hitting a man in his 20s. The accused then began yelling and tackled a passenger in his 40s, according to WPS.

A passenger deployed bear spray to stop the assault, police say, and the accused ran off the bus. He was later apprehended by officers on the Disraeli Bridge.

The other passengers also left the bus due to the bear spray, police add, but nobody was injured. The bus required decontamination and the bear spray was seized.

Winnipeg’s Steven Michael Gagnon, 30, is facing an assault with a weapon charge, and other offences. He was detained in custody.
