IIU closes investigation on fatal police shooting in Winnipeg’s North End

Manitoba’s police watchdog says it has ended its investigation into the death of a man who was shot by a Winnipeg police officer in February 2024.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says that on Feb. 13, 2024, WPS was executing an order under the Mental Health Act at a home along Magnus Avenue, when officers encountered an armed man barricaded in the home.

Officers requested the Tactical Support Team (TST) which entered the home, and during a use-of-force encounter, two officers fired their service weapons.

The man inside the home was shot and taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

During the IIU’s investigation, they interviewed 13 officers and seven civilians who all witnessed the incident and were able to determine that the use of lethal force was authorized and justified by law.
