Indigenous leaders across Manitoba are celebrating a new Grand Chief, following Kyra Wilson's decisive victory in Wednesday's Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs by-election. Mitchell Ringos reports.

Indigenous leaders across Manitoba are celebrating a new era, and a new Grand Chief, following Kyra Wilson’s decisive victory in Wednesday’s Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs by-election.

“She speaks now on behalf of all of the Chief of Manitoba, and I look forward to our discussions,” said David Chartrand, the president of MMF.

Garrison Settee, the Grand Chief of MKO adds, “I’m relieved we have another female warrior that will lead us and I’m ready to support her and walk with her as we move forward together.”

Former Long Plain First Nation Chief, now Grand Chief, Kyra Wilson, won the ballot by a considerable margin on Wednesday, earning 37 of 61 first-round votes.

Long Plain First Nation’s Chief David Meeches told CityNews, that he’s proud to see two Long Plain members in leadership with Grand Chief Wilson at AMC and Grand Chief Jerry Daniels at SCO. MMF President David Chartrand and MKO Grand Chief Garrison Settee praised the decision, saying they look forward to future collaboration.

There’s good examples when we come together and try our best to make things better for the things for each of the people we represent,” said Chartrand.

Grand Chief Settee adding, “As Grand Chiefs standing together, supporting our chiefs we can only do great things as long as we strive forward together.”

While Grand Chief Wilson looks to guide AMC into the future, the role played by Former Acting Grand Chief Betsy Kennedy can not be overlooked, after stepping in following the sudden passing of Late Grand Chief Cathy Merrick last September.

“Grand Chief was a very dear friend, and they wanted somebody to help and continue on with what she wanted and that’s what I wanted to do,” explained Kennedy.

Kennedy says this experience was one she will never forget and said she’s looking forward to heading back home to her community of War Lake First Nation.

“We need to bring our women and making sure they’re included in everything that we do, and this shows that just now.”
