Before the puck dropped for the seventh annual Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre night, the Winnipeg Jets Unveiled a new special edition jersey that’ll be worn Sunday when they take on the Calgary Flames.
In addition to the beautiful new look, True North Sports and Entertainment Chairman, Mark Chipman presented WASAC with $45,000 dollars aimed at helping support the programs and services it provides to thousands of indigenous children across the province.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew was in attendance for the cheque ceremony, and spoke on the organization’s tremendous impact, on the community, and his very own family.
“My wife Lisa, one of her first jobs was working at WASAC 1.0, way back in its early days,” said Premier Kinew Friday. “Now, she’s a medical doctor, so the work you are investing in it really makes a difference in the generations of positivity.”
The weekend will see Indigenous youth from Northern Manitoba communities and Treaty 3 welcomed for what officials said is a weekend of immersive programming with some NHL greats. This includes a skate at Camp Manitou with NHL Alumni Ray Neufeld, Trevor Kidd and Gerard McDonald.
They’ll also learn about the fuel that drives athletes with a food and nutrition class at the award-winning Feast Cafe Bistro in Winnipeg and learn about the importance of mental wellness with the True North Foundation’s Project 11.
Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre Night is set for Jan. 26, 2025 at Canada Life Centre.
