MPI, Snoman Inc. team up on snowmobile safety
Manitoba Public Insurance and Snoman Inc. are reminding residents to be safe while out on their sleds this winter as snowmobile season is in full swing.
Between 2021 and 2024 there were a total of 12 snowmobile deaths in Manitoba, with speed being the lead contributing factor, but other fatalities included alcohol, careless driving, lack of helmet use and inexperience.
“Excessive speed is a contributing factor in the majority of incidents and can lead to fatalities,” said Jason Wiebe, president of Snoman Inc. in a news release.

“Riders have to be cognizant of their abilities and to not impair their sense of control by consuming alcohol or drugs while riding. Safety is first and foremost for our organization.”
January and February log the highest fatality rates for snowmobilers in Manitoba.
The public insurer and Snoman Inc. are now partnering up to spread a message of safety and mark Feb. 8, the first ever Winter Trails Day in Manitoba and to wrap up International Snowmobile Safety Week.
“By highlighting safety concerns, we are creating awareness that there are many proactive steps riders can take to make themselves safer while out on their snowmobiles, especially wearing a helmet, controlling speed, and riding sober,” said Maria Campos, Vice President and Chief Customer and Product Officer with MPI, in the release.
“MPI doesn’t advocate for and educate about safety alone. It is through partnerships, like the one we have with Snoman, that we are able to fulfill our road safety mission – whether it is on or off-road.”

Some of the best practices for keeping safe were actually demonstrated as part of the critical reminder, with officials showcasing how to properly share the roadway, sharing information about trail safety and grooming equipment while also giving riders insight into the equipment needed to keep safe.
