Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) — is looking into a woman’s death after she was taken into custody by RCMP.
On Friday, the IIU says it was notified that around 8 p.m. on Jan. 15, Mounties responded to a 911 hang-up call at a home in Vogar, Man.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman under the influence of drugs who had reportedly tried to use a weapon on someone in the home.
Officers were able to take the woman into custody.
While taking the woman for a medical assessment at Lakeshore General Hospital in Ashern, the woman reportedly became unresponsive. At this point, the officers pulled over and requested paramedics and provided medical care.
Paramedics arrived and took the woman to the Lakeshore General Hospital, before the woman was later taken to St. Boniface Hospital, in Winnipeg, where she later died.
After hearing of the death, RCMP informed IIU, and an investigation is underway.
