2 men charged in connection to serial commercial robberies

Winnipeg police say two people have been charged in what’s being called “serial” commercial robberies at hotels, restaurants, and bars throughout the city.

WPS says between Jan. 1 and Jan. 10, officers responded to several reports of thefts where masked suspects were armed with a handgun and bear spray, and in one incident a hand grenade.

Police say the suspects allegedly robbed one location on Jan. 1, five locations on Jan. 6, four locations on Jan. 8, and two locations on Jan. 10.

During the incidents, the suspects reportedly demanded VLT money or cash from employees.

While initial reports were investigated by patrol officers, investigations were later turned over to the major crimes unit, which was able to link 41-year-old Matthew Gibbs, and 33-year-old Daniel Redcliffe to the incidents.

Around 10:09 a.m. on Jan. 14, officers conducted a traffic stop near Fort Street and Portage Avenue, and were able to take Gibbs into custody.

That evening, officers were able to conduct another traffic stop, this time near Ellice Avenue and Langside Street, where they were able to take Redcliffe into custody. At the time, police found some methamphetamine on him.

A search warrant was later executed at a home on Furby Street, where officers found and seized several items relating to the robberies, and weapons.

Police say Gibbs has been charged with nine counts of armed robbery, ten counts of disguise with intent, theft under $5,000, robbery, and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Police also say that Redcliffe has been charged with ten counts of armed robbery, ten counts of disguise with intent, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a weapon, three counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order, theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000, and robbery.
