Winnipeg teen facing charges after police seize cocaine, gun during highway checkstop

By News Staff

Police say a 16-year-old Winnipeg boy is facing weapons and drug charges after a loaded gun, drugs, and cash were seized during a highway checkstop on Monday.

Nelson House RCMP say officers were called to assist First Nation Safety Officers around 12:30 p.m. for the checkstop on Highway 620.

The FNSO had allegedly already seized open liquor from an SUV with five occupants – the 16-year-old driver from Winnipeg, 14- and 15-year-old youths from Nelson House, and two women aged 32 and 33 from Thompson.

Authorities allege the driver was searched outside the vehicle and was carrying a bag containing illicit drugs, cash, and cell phones.

“While undergoing arrest, the male admitted to having a loaded handgun also in his possession,” RCMP said in a news release.

Police say officers found cocaine, power tools and a large amount of cash in the vehicle.

The Winnipeg teen was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession for the purpose of trafficking, among other offences.

The other occupants of the SUV were arrested but later released without being charged, according to police.

An investigation is ongoing.
