A new year comes with a new look for an increasing number of RCMP detachments across the province, as the Mounties continue their national roll-out of body-worn cameras.
With as many as a third of officers in Manitoba expected to be donning the equipment by the end of March.
Early indicators have shown the technology’s potential when it comes to evidence gathering, but as for its impact on public trust, and transparency, that’s far less clear.
Since their debut in the province in Steinbach in November, body cams have been deployed in Portage La Prairie, Amaranth, and Treherne.
With four more detachments set to begin using the technology in January, with two dozen additional units following suit in February and March.
The phased rollout, came together after the Federal government committed $240 million over six years and $50 million in annual operating funding.
The RCMP have emphasised the tech’s potential in many areas, including its ability to improve public trust.
Christopher Schneider, a sociology professor, at the University of Brandon, says studies in other jurisdictions have shown mixed results on whether cameras help to reduce use of force incidents or public complaints.
As for transparency, Manitobans should temper their expectations, as privacy laws restrict the majority of footage captured from being released.
Manitoba RCMP expects over 400 officers in 44 detachments to be equipped with cameras by the end of April
