What’s open in Winnipeg on New Year’s Eve, Day

CityNews Reporter Eddie Huband breaks down what will be open in Winnipeg on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The holidays are almost wrapped up but there’s still one more thing to plan for, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.  Here’s a quick look at what will be open in Winnipeg as we ring in the new year.

In terms of shopping, don’t expect to spend the first day of the year hunting for post-Christmas deals. Most malls will be closing at either 4 or 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and all shopping centres in the city will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Liquor stores will also have modified schedules, as most liquor marts will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on New Year’s eve, but all liquor marts will be closed on new years day. Though, grocery stores will be open on both days with reduced hours..but make sure to call ahead if you plan to head out.

All civic offices will be also closed on New Years Day, as well as libraries, swimming pools and leisure centres, and there will be no garbage pick up.

If you’re looking for things to do on with the family, the Manitoba museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.  And the Winnipeg art gallery will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

If you plan to use transit, buses will be operating on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day, but the service will offer extended hours on certain routes on New Year’s Eve. Buses will also be free on New Year’s Eve starting at 7 p.m., and the Winnipeg Police Service is urging the public to use public transit.

The latest statistics from the WPS’s holiday check stop program from December 17th show that in week two, there were six criminal charges laid for impaired drinking, as well as 29 immediate roadside prohibitions.
