Personal information leaked in Pembina Trails School Division cyber attack

By News Staff

The personal information of current and former students and staff at the Pembina Trails School Division may have been compromised in the cyber attack earlier this month.

The school division says it learned personal information “was either accessed or could have been accessed by an unauthorized third party.”

It warned students, staff, and former staff earlier Thursday.

Pembina Trails says former students who attended a Pembina Trails school in 2014 or later, and former staff who worked at Pembina Trails in 2009 or later, may have had their information compromised.

The school division adds it will be providing updates on its website over the next 24 hours.

“The division’s priorities remain on minimizing the impact on learning and safeguarding our students and staff information,” said Pembina Trails School Division superintendent and CEO Shelley Amos in a statement. “We find it appalling that an organization dedicated to the education and safety of children should be the focus of this kind of criminal activity.”

The division said last week no financial information was compromised in the cyber attack that locked up the schools’ various electronic systems.

It is working with a cyber security management firm specializing in this type of incident.

The investigation could take weeks or even months, Pembina has said.
