Man charged after assaulting security guard

Winnipeg police say a 20-year-old man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a security guard over the weekend.

WPS says around 7:50 a.m., officers responded to a report that a security guard was being assaulted along York Avenue near Donald Street.

Officers who were patrolling the area responded to the scene, and found a 51-year-old security guard suffering from injuries.

Through an investigation, police learned that a 20-year-old man had attempted to enter the location where the security guard was found, via the Winnipeg Walkway System (Skywalk) Carlton Street entrance, but was denied by security guards.

Due to being denied entry, the man allegedly became agitated and became aggressive towards the guards.

It is also believed that he was intoxicated at the time.

Security then attempted to de-escalate the situation, at which point the man began physically assaulting the guards, causing one to fall to the ground, having his glasses and name tag ripped off, and was stomped on. The pin from the name tag was then used in an attempt to stab the security guard.

The security was treated for injuries by paramedics, and did not go to a hospital.

WPS were reportedly able to find the man in question and took him into custody.

Since, 20-year-old Stephan Ponicappo has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and mischief under $5,000.
