Manitoba grand chief on leave ‘for health reasons’ after reported altercation

Just days after it was widely reported he was taken to hospital following an alleged fight in Ottawa, the Southern Chiefs Organization (SCO) has announced Jerry Daniels is on leave due to health reasons for “an undetermined length of time.”

That’s the update sent to CityNews Wednesday, which confirmed Chief Cornell McLean of the Lake Manitoba First Nation has been appointed Acting Grand Chief by the SCO’s Chiefs’ Executive Committee.

“The Southern Chiefs’ Organization is in good hands with Chief McLean, who has been a member of SCO’s Chiefs’ Executive Committee and Chair of the Finance and Personnel Committee for eight years,” said the written update from SCO’s media relations.

It did not include any information about the alleged fight involving the on-leave grand chief, but noted the Chiefs’ Executive Committee will be setting a date for a Chiefs’-In-Summit to be held in the new year.

“On the operational side, it is business as usual for SCO and the many programs and services that support First Nation citizens,” the statement continued.

Daniels was elected grand chief of the SCO for the first time in 2017 and was acclaimed for a third term this summer.
