Dangerously low temperatures are about to hit Winnipeg and the municipal government is advising residents on how to keep warm as the mercury drops.
Environment Canada is forecasting a low of – 26 C on Wednesday, but with the wind chill, it will feel like – 38 C in the morning, and – 30 C in the afternoon with a risk of frostbite all day.
Ahead of the cold snap, the City of Winnipeg is offering residents some tips on how to protect themselves and others as the cold season settles for the rest of the season.
The city reminds families that older community members and young children should avoid the outdoors for long periods of time.
Those with older loved ones, relatives and neighbours who live alone, should be checking in on them as the cold weather continues. Pets should also be brought inside and be limited when it comes to cold exposure.
However, if you think someone is at risk as a result of the weather, it’s important to know the symptoms of hypothermia, which include confusion, shivering, trouble speaking, sleepiness and stiff muscles.
Severe hypothermia can be fatal and if you see someone who is in need of help or is injured due to extreme cold should call 911 with their location and condition, waiting with the person until emergency crews arrive.
More information on how to keep warm can be found on the City of Winnipeg website.
