A 47-year-old man is facing charges after impersonating a peace officer and trying to pull people over, Winnipeg police say.
WPS says officers responded to a report that a pick-up truck with emergency lights was trying to conduct traffic stops near Higgins Avenue and the Louise Bridge at around 8:15 p.m. on Dec. 6.
At around 10 p.m., officers were able to locate the vehicle in question — a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado — parked in a field along Higgins Avenue.
Upon approaching the truck, police say the driver exited and reportedly challenged the authority and jurisdiction of the WPS officers before returning to his truck and refusing to exit.
After some time, officers were able to remove the man from his vehicle and took him into custody after using a taser.
After the man was in custody, police searched the truck, seizing an emergency light bar, a two-foot conducted energy baton, two collapsible batons, roughly 41 grams of cannabis, and 15 cartons of contraband cigarettes.
As a result, the 47-year-old man is facing seven charges, including possession of a weapon, personating a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, and unlawful possession of sale of tobacco products. WPS also note he is facing additional charges under the Excise Tax Act for unlawful possession of sale of tobacco products.
