The Manitoba government is planning to look at ways to support print journalism, ranging from big daily newspapers to small weekly publications and cultural outlets in different languages.
The NDP government wants to strike a legislature committee, which would include Opposition Progressive Conservatives, to consider what kind of support might be offered and which outlets would qualify.
New Democrat legislature member Robert Loiselle says a lot of local papers have lost staff in recent years and the aim is to ensure that outlets survive.
The government is hoping to have a committee set up and report back in a little more than a year.
The Tories say the government’s plan is vague and there are many unanswered questions.
Tory legislature member Grant Jackson says many rural radio stations have been hurting too, and he’d like some more details from the government about what exactly is being planned.
