Winnipeg home, commercial building to be demolished after fire: WFPS

The Winnipeg fire department says a mixed-use commercial building and multi-family home will need to be demolished “due to structural concerns” after sustaining major damage in a fire Monday morning.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) says crews were called to the two-storey building in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue around 6:18 a.m.

The commercial part of the building was occupied while the residential units were vacant, according to WFPS. All occupants evacuated before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.

By midday Monday, firefighting operations were still ongoing. The WFPS says road closures in the area will remain in place until work is completed at the scene.

An investigation is underway.
