Warning issued as winter weather arrives in Manitoba

With snow in the forecast, the province is advising motorists to take care while on provincial roads and highways.

Environment Canada has forecasted that a powerful low-pressure system approaching from the south will bring precipitation to the region, with significant rainfall expected and the possibility of snow.

On Tuesday, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure issued its own warning with the weather expected to take a turn for the worse.

The warning indicated the government is inspecting and maintaining the province’s 19,000-kilometre highway system to provide safe travel across Manitoba, with motorists advised to watch for crews working on roadways.

“All equipment operates with flashing blue warning lights and drivers should stay well back of removal crews. Motorists should not attempt to pass a snowplow at any time while it is in operation and should slow down when passing approaching snowplows,” the warning explained.

The special weather statement from Environment Canada explained as the low-pressure system continues, the rain — between 15 mm to 25 mm expected — will turn to snow in the Western Red River Valley and this evening in Winnipeg.

The snow is expected to continue on Wednesday, although there could be rain as well, with Environment Canada saying small changes in the system could result in varying levels of snowfall.

Motorists are advised to check Manitoba 511 for updates on road conditions and to be alert of both changing weather conditions and the province’s operations fleet, consisting of roughly 340 truck plows, de-icing equipment and graders.
