Shared Health ready as Canada Post strike looms

A Canada Post strike is looming but Shared Health says the province’s medical systems are ready.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has given Canada Post notice they are in a position to strike as of Nov. 15.

It’s expected the strike will affect “millions of Canadians and businesses” and Shared Health is no different, but the health provider is taking steps to mitigate the impact.

“Clinics and service areas have paused use of Canada Post for distribution of patient appointment letters and pre-appointment information,” indicated a notice from Shared Health.

Patients will instead be notified by email and or by phone, about information concerning their upcoming appointments.

Some patients, including those with upcoming appointments at clinics located at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, or Boundary Trails Hospital in Morden-Winkler, may receive their appointment confirmation by text message.

The notice says the text will come from a “431” phone number and won’t include patient information, but specifics like time, date, and location.

“Patients will never be asked to disclose financial information over the phone or via email,” read the notice.

“Do not engage with anyone who says they require financial information before a health appointment.”

In terms of confirmation letters for appointments scheduled after Feb. 1, 2025, they are being held.

The notice explained if the postal disruption continues, patients will receive information about their appointments over the phone or via text.
