First Nation man, 23, fatally assaulted in Winnipeg: police

By News Staff

Winnipeg police say they are investigating the death of a 23-year-old man last week as a homicide.

The Winnipeg Police Service says Jamal Eli Preston Miles, a member of Shamattawa First Nation who was living in Winnipeg, was found with life-threatening injuries on Alexander Avenue near Isabel Street on Friday around 8:47 p.m.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide investigators believe several people were involved in a verbal confrontation outside that escalated with the victim being seriously assaulted.

Police say the suspect or suspects fled before police arrived.
