Fatal 19-vehicle ‘chain reaction’ collision on icy highway just outside Winnipeg

By News Staff

Mounties say a 55-year-old man from Tyndall was killed in collision involving 19 vehicles caused by icy road conditions on a bridge just outside of Winnipeg Wednesday morning.

Selkirk RCMP say the 6:30 a.m. collision on Highway 59 began when a vehicle heading south lost control on the bridge near Springhill Winter Sports Park.

“This resulted in a chain reaction of collisions that involved 19 vehicles,” police said in a news release.

The 55-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene. Several motorists sustained “a variety of minor injuries,” police add.

Officers re-routed vehicles to avoid further collisions at the site.

RCMP is asking anyone travelling on Highway 59 between 6:30-7 a.m. with dash camera footage to contact 204-482-1222.

Selkirk RCMP and a forensic collision reconstructionist are investigating.
