Winnipeg to begin controlled burn program on Oct. 30

By CityNews Staff

The City of Winnipeg says it will be conducting controlled burns in natural parts of the city starting on Oct. 30.

The City is expecting to do controlled burns until Nov. 14, if weather conditions such as winds are suitable, and an appropriate fire guard is in place.

Controlled burns are used across the prairie reducing litter and returning nutrients to the soil.

Additionally, the lack of fire will also allow weeds to invade endangered plant communities, according to the City.

The City of Winnipeg has been using controlled burns since 1986.
