‘Love bomb’ drops on Winnipeg in support of World Mental Health Day

In support of World Mental Health Day, the Love Notes Campaign is dropping a “love bomb” on Winnipeg. 150 notes will be spread across Winnipeg, in hopes of raising awareness for mental health.

“Six years ago I was hospitalized and it’s super important to me, and it’s become kind of my mission to change this stigma, and one of the ways we change the stigma is by talking about it,” said Ralph Bryant, the creator of the Love Notes Campaign. “I just hope that everyone feels the love that I’m feeling putting them up.”

Bryant started this project as a way to spread messages of hope and create more conversations surrounding mental health.

According to Statistics Canada, just under 24 per cent of Manitobans reported having fair or poor mental health, and Bryant hopes he can help make a difference.

“Sometimes someone is ready to do that healing work, and sometimes they need a little jolt to just kind of get them through the day until they’re ready, and I feel like, that’s what hopefully these love notes are, is that little jolt.”

Following a public call across social media, Bryant received quotes and positive affirmations from people all over Canada showing their support, and with help from his small team of “love elves,” the messages were hung up in various areas of the city to show people they are not alone.

“Keep moving forward you got this, and you got this is one of my favourite things to tell people, so that’s what I love as Chief Elf, is that we’re spreading this love on World Mental Health Day,” said Veronica Ternopolski, “Chief Elf” for the Love Notes Campaign.

Bryant is hopeful these love notes will have a positive impact on the community and says this is just the beginning for the Love Notes Campaign.

“Someone’s going to see one of these messages, and be like, yeah I needed to hear that today, so I think that is kind of the point.”
