Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating following a fatal officer-involved shooting at a Winnipeg apartment building. Kurt Black reports.

Winnipeg police say a man is dead after being shot by a Winnipeg Police Service officer Wednesday afternoon.

WPS says officers responded to multiple reports that a man had what seemed like an edged weapon in an apartment building on Main Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man who was armed, in a hallway of the apartment building. This led to a use-of-force altercation between the man and the officers.

During the altercation, an officer used a taser, and a gun was fired, hitting the man.

Following this, officers provided medical care, including applying a chest seal and a tourniquet before paramedics arrived at the scene.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition where he later died from his injuries.

Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba — has been notified of the fatal shooting, and has begun an investigation.
